72 Flats and Counting

We spent our Saturday watering our garden that now covers both spaces in the garage. I’m not sure how many dahlia’s we have, but Brian estimated that it’s over 500.  It’s a good thing the snow is thawing fast.

Today I seeded many flower varieties and a flat of Atlantic Giant Pumpkins.  Why pumpkins you ask? Well there are many reasons. First, I just think the plants are beautiful.  I love to watch their flowers open. I love to look to see if they are female or male flowers. Pumpkins have both.  You can tell the difference because the female flowers have a little ball on the base of the flower at the stem. This, when pollinated will turn into a pumpkin.

I like to grow pumpkins because I think having variety on the farm just makes it healthier.  We have bees and they will need lots of variety of things to pollinate. Also, moose have never bothered my pumpkins, so that’s another plus.  If we get a good crop, we will have a pumpkin patch for people to come out and choose a pumpkin to buy.
