Sowing Seeds and Planting Seeds for the Future

There may be about thirty inches of snow outside, but inside the soil smells soooo good! As I filled flats with soil and started meticulously placing tomato seeds into the center of each cell, I thought about the power of words. I sometimes buy a tomato seed because of the name. Words matter, even with plants. I bought heirloom tomato seeds from an Amish seed company because of their names. There is the Underground Railroad. I bought this seed because I thought it would be fun to grow them and then talk to my class about what the Underground Railroad was.

Then I bought a variety called Eva because I have a student in my classroom named that. Won’t she be surprised when we grow these together. I did the same thing with one called the Dutchman because one of my student’s father is from the Netherlands. Then there are the random The General and a one with the name Gypsy in it.

Wouldn’t these names make a great story? I’ll have to wait and see what the kids think of them.
